About the band

Who We Are

Iridium is a Cincinnati Ohio-based rock and cover band. The original Iridium was formed back in 1977 by a group of guys who loved rock music. When we started the band, we were young and inexperienced and were doing it for fun. Times were tough back then. We practiced in a barn behind Tim's house with a goat for an audience. Word spread and we soon had a loyal following and started playing the local bars. Many of our fans were so devoted that we could not even rehearse without a spontaneous party breaking out! We continued until 1980 when several of the band members took separate paths. However, there was an undeniable chemistry between us that we always looked back on with fondness and that has not diminished over the years. The original members reunited in 2001 for what first appeared to be just a reunion jam session. We got together on Friday nights to play some music and swap stories of the good old days. Soon, it became obvious that we still had the old flame and the urge came back to play live again. Steve's original song "Like a Kid Again" is a chronicle of the early band days. We still play a unique blend of new and classic rock. Our material ranges from modern bands like AudioSlave, Nirvana, Three Doors Down, Creed, Alice In Chains, Foo Fighters, Tonic, and still captures the classic rock grooves of bands like Aerosmith, Led Zepplin, The Who, Peter Frampton, The Stones, Bad Company, AC/DC, and Van Halen.

The Name

How did we come up with the name "Iridium" you ask?

Iridium, discovered in 1804, was named after the Latin word iris, meaning rainbow. It was so named because of its colourful salts. Iridium is known as a "platinum metal". It just seemed right for several reasons:

At the time, we thought we had a platinum album in our future (yea right! ).

Iridium is a heavy metal. The term "metal music" had not been invented yet back then, but we were doing what was known as "hard rock" and the name seemed to fit the style.

Iridium is an element on the periodic table of elements. We originally formed in 1977 and Iridium's atomic number is 77. Coincidence? I think not.....

Iridium Rocks!
